Mon front est rouge encor du baiser de la Reine ;

Britisherie
The eighteenth-century writer Samuel Johnson famously remarked ‘It is commonly observed, that when two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of the weather; they are in haste to tell each other, what each must already know, that it is hot or cold, bright or cloudy, windy or calm.’

Hans Haacke, Helmsboro Country, 1990
Issues surrounding the arts have been completely absent in the political whirlwind in the past weeks. As such, I thought it would be worthwhile to look back at one of the most polemic and political art from the history of contemporary American Art.This work by Haacke, a large scale model of a cigarette pack, makes a direct reference to Jesse Helms, a conservative member of the Senate, who was tied to tobacco lobbying. During his time, Helms not only wanted to close down the National Endowment for the Arts, but also censored and suppressed artists and their exhibitions. Haacke’s giant cigarettes are rolled up reproductions of the Bill of Rights, and the work calls for freedom of speech while simultaneously acknowledging the fact that tobacco companies had become one of the most prolific donors of museums in the 1990s. Haacke proposed, “art works are no longer private affairs,” and that art institutions and museums were “on the slippery road to becoming public relations agents for the interests of big business and its ideological allies.” For Haacke, art for art’s sake no longer existed as he saw art institutions and museums as biased political bodies.

This man is just too beautiful, on the outside as well as the inside. George the Poet is an English, well, poet who is just TOO amazing to put in to words!
His wordplay, the content, his intelligence is just so special and this poem is no different. It’s called Pink Matter and has Frank Ocean and André 3000’s song Pink Matter playing in the background and the subject matter is similar and oh so relatable.
I will say no more, just listen and check out more of his poems on YouTube. This dude is the truth.

Fela in performance (1971) (by oronbaba)
I admire this man. Thou I was never aware he was sexist, had 27 seven wives - all his dancers(allegedly to give them some sort of respectable rank- forget the obvious reasons) ! I’d understand them! he had that magnetism!!.. and his looks !
More seriously he was a notorious political activist- would feature article, call them pamphlets on locals newspapers denouncing the government regime. He presented twice for presidential election and ended in jail, beaten up!
And most importantly he is said to smoke cigar size blunts - He’s the man every rapper would want to be !?
